Having a spa warranty gives you peace of mind-but also responsibility. A hot tub warranty is actually a two way contract between you and the manufacturer. If you follow the owner’s manuals instructions provided by the hot tub manufacturer, they will stand behind their product for you.

There are two things to consider when you look at spa warranties:

1. A hot tub warranty is only as good as its manufacturer. You should take into consideration both the longevity of the manufacturer and their service history. Carefully review a manufacturer’s warranty before you purchase a hot tub to ensure that you are getting the best service and the most for your money. Some parts (like an ozonator) may not be warranted by your hot tub manufacturer, but by the manufacturer who produced the part. Ask if your retailer will support those warranties.

2. Consider the relationship between the dealer and the manufacturer. A spa dealer who has had long affiliations with manufacturers may be a better choice than a dealer who has changed their manufacturer affiliation several times over the past few years. The dealer should be able to prove a long and stable relationship with the manufacturer to assure you that your warranty will be supported.

Warranty Coverages

Almost all manufacturers provide different types of warranty coverage for the different parts and elements of their hot tubs. Keep in mind that the length of the coverage is usually determined by dividing in half the time that the manufacturer perceives the part to last. The following sections explain what to look for in a spa warranty:

Most Important Item To Warranty:

1. Shell. The spa shell is the most important part of your hot tub because if it fails, it can be the most costly item to repair or replace. Look for an extensive warranty, understanding that often there are two types of protection in shell warranties, structural and surface:

• Structural Warranty. The structural warranty covers the shell’s ability to hold water. Most manufacturers of quality spas offer a minimum of seven years.
• Surface Warranty. The surface warranty protects against delamination, discoloring, blistering, and cracking – any type of cosmetic blemishing. The surface warranty usually offers less coverage than the structural warranty. We recommend looking for a manufacturer that provides a minimum of five to ten year of surface coverage.

First Items To Wear Out:

• Cover. The cover is likely to be the first thing that will need to be replaced on your hot tub. While most manufacturers provide covers with the purchase of a hot tub, these covers are usually not of the highest quality and will need to be replaced within two to three years. Covers can be expensive to replace, (anywhere between $300 – $600). This type of coverage will ensure that the cover will be able to withstand all of the normal abuses from customer mishandling, its constant removal and replacement, and nature’s elements for at least five to six years.
• Heating Element. The hot tub’s heating element is usually the second item that will need to be replaced. The minerals and chemicals in your water can adversely affect the heating element over a period of time. The warranty should be longer than one year for your protection.

Other Hot Tub Parts To Review:

• Accessories. Accessories cover everything from ozonators to cover lifters. Often these accessories are not manufactured by the same people who built your hot tub. Therefore, you will often be presented with a separate warranty from the manufacturer who built the part. It is important to check that your dealer will support this warranty in the case that repairs are ever needed.
• Electronics.Most manufacturers utilize computer activated electronic controls. These controls are sensitive to moisture and vapor, and have a high susceptibility to problems due to the inherent nature of the product. Look for a solid warranty that provides at least three to four years coverage.The biggest problems with electronic controls, however, are electrical storms, lightning and customer mishandling. An electrical storm could easily destroy the entire electrical system, costing well over $1,000 to replace. No Fault warranties that cover “Acts of God” as well as customer abuse may be available. This ideal warranty will protect you from extensive repair costs, but also may be costly in up front hot tub pricing.

• Equipment . All of the hot tub’s parts (i.e. pumps and blowers) and plumbing should be covered within the warranty for at least three years. If the parts and plumbing are not covered, it could lead to potentially serious problems that can be costly to repair. Also be sure to find out if there are any fees associated with parts that need to be shipped from various locations – not all retailers will carry parts for all of the hot tub models that they sell.
• Owner Obligations, It is important to carefully review the warranty for any obligations of the owner. Some manufacturers require that the consumer pay for all labor and repair expenses. Also, if repairs are unable to made on site some manufacturers require the consumer to pay the shipping costs of transporting the spa, or its parts, back to the original manufacturer. This can be very expensive, potentially costing well over $1000.
• Acts Voiding the Warranty. This section is important to read because some manufacturers insert clauses into the warranty that are unfair to the consumer. Look for out of the ordinary things that invalidate the warranty.

For example,

• Does the manufacturer require you to use only their brand of chemicals?
• Does it restrict you from using certain types of chemicals?
• Does it prohibit you from exposing your spa from direct sunlight? (An especially unfair clause for those with outdoor spas.)
• Read this section carefully before any purchase is made….it could end up saving you a significant amount of money, as well as headaches.

Little or No Warranty Coverage:

• Cabinet. The cabinetry is usually not covered for an extensive period of time. This is due to the fact that wood cabinetry requires regular maintenance by the consumer in order to keep it in top form. A one year warranty is sufficient. Simulated wood cabinets offer longer warranties as the cabinets last longer.
• Labor. There is usually little or no coverage within the warranty for labor costs. However, there are almost always extended service contracts which are made available to the consumer, and we highly recommend purchasing one.

In short-read the warranty. Yes, it is not the most exciting reading. But you’ll come away feeling better about your purchase, you’ll be educated, and you’ll be reminded that a hot tub warranty is a two-way contract-you’ll have responsibilities for its care and upkeep, too.

In the past, a majority of hot tubs were designed with less than eight (8) jets in them. Through advancements in warm water therapy, today’s hot tubs now have the luxury of having up to 160 jets in them. 4. Moving Massage Jet. Some manufacturers have designed elongated oval jets that oscillate the water in either a vertical or horizontal fashion. They work by fanning the water back and forth in a pulsating manner. They are ideal becaus they can provide a tremendous amount of therapy to the back, or any other specific area of the body. Some manufacturers put them in a sequence, usually two or three in a row, to provide a deep and thorough massage to the entire back area. This positioning of multiple jets is ideal for a therapy seat.

5. Shoulder Jets. These jets are designed to be installed above the water line providing targeted massage action to the shoulder area. Some manufacturers have even designed them to be directional because most people are of differing heights. With this jet, it is possible to create massaging pressure right where you want it.

6. Pillow Jet. This feature combines the comfort of a pillow with the massaging pressure of a jet, allowing for a complete neck massage. Massage therapists have often indicated that the neck area is the place where most people hold in all their stress and tension. Hot Tub Spa Cabinets Made From California Redwood

Since the first thing people notice when they see a hot tub spa is the cabinet, it is best to use a high-quality wood to enhance the overall look of your hot tub. The appearance of an elegant, textured cabinet will not only add to the aesthetic appeal of the spa, but will also add to the feeling that the spa is quality furniture.

When choosing a material for your cabinetry, take into consideration its quality, structural integrity, and its ability to withstand normal customer abuse and wear and tear.

Over 95% of all major hot tub manufacturers use at least one or more of the following four types of materials in constructing hot tub cabinets:

1. Redwood is the most commonly used wood in the hot tub industry. Most hot tub manufacturers are located in California, where redwood grows in abundance. It is therefore the predominant material used in spa cabinetry. However, the quality of redwood varies greatly among lumber mills. Check with the manufacturer for information about the grade of redwood that is used in the construction of the hot tub.

2. Western Red Cedar. It is grown in hostile environments (i.e. colder climates, coastlines, etc.), where it fights to survive with other plant life and vegetation. This helps it to build tremendous strength, while also developing into a very durable and weather-resistant wood. Many up-scale home builders use western red cedar because it easily stands up to the abuse from nature’s elements, while still providing an elegant appearance.

3. Inland Cedar. Inland cedar is a light, blonde wood, absent of the deep, rich tones present in western red cedar. Since it is grown in milder, non-threatening climates, inland cedar does not have the strength and integrity as does western red cedar.

4. Synthetic Cabinetry A common myth about spa ownership is that it requires a substantial amount of maintenance, and therefore is a time consuming investment. Fortunately, this is no longer the case-recent technological advancements have made spa maintenance a breeze. One particular area of improvement is the spa cabinet. When shopping for a spa you might want to consider one that features a synthetic cabinet rather than conventional redwood so you can spend less time caring for your spa, and more time relaxing in it. Redwood cabinets often require frequent cleaning and staining to keep your spa looking fresh and new. Synthetic cabinets, however, are virtually maintenance free. To clean, simply spray the surface with a mild soap and water solution, then rinse with water. No scrubbing is necessary. The cabinet may be touched-up or restrained every three to four years, if needed (this will vary according to the environment).

All alternative cabinets are not alike, however. Be sure to select a synthetic cabinet which combines the natural warmth and beauty of redwood with the low maintenance and high durability of rigid polymers. The cabinet should have an embossed wood grain and rich color to ensure a natural appearance. Cabinets constructed with polymers won’t crack, peel, blister or de-laminate, even after prolonged exposure to the elements. And be sure to inquire about the cabinet’s warranty.

Cabinet Construction: Look For These 4 Features

Just as important as the type of material you choose for your cabinetry is the way in which the cabinet is constructed. The following are four features to look for in a quality cabinet:

1. Removable Walls. Removable wall panels give the owner the ability to remove the walls from the hot tub in case repairs are needed. Just imagine trying to repair a car without having the ability to lift or remove its hood. The repairing process becomes nearly impossible, extremely time consuming, and expensive. With this design, your spa can be easily checked and serviced when needed.

An additional benefit of removable wall panel design is improved quality control during the manufacturing process. In particular, manufacturers check thoroughly for leaks during the water testing procedures. With removable wall panels, a leak can be found easily. Without it, the process of checking for leaks becomes dramatically more difficult.

2. Interior Frame Construction. Having removable wall panels is only part of the solution to your spa’s “serviceability”. Your spa must possess the strength to hold 200-550 gallons of water (between 1,600 and 4,600 lbs.) when the wall panels are removed. To convey this strength to your hot tub, some manufacturers employ a 2×4 frame, while other manufacturers use standalone shells or metal bracing as alternatives to 2×4 wood framing.

Many manufacturers save money by only using 1×2′s or 2×3′s to construct their frames. This dimension stock may not provide the adequate strength required to support a spa full of water. When the wall panels are removed, stress is added to an already weak frame. Some manufacturers tout having removable walls, but that benefit is compromised if the construction cannot support itself. Ultimately, you want to be sure that your interior frame is up to the task of supporting a spa full of water, even when the panels are removed.

3. Pressure Treated Base. Wherever you choose to install your hot tub, it is strongly recommended that your spa have a pressure treated base – a critical requirement if your spa is outdoors. Since an outdoor spa is subjected to harsh elements detrimental to any type of wood, a pressure treated base will prolong the life of your spa’s cabinet.

There are many cabinet features available to make your hot tub experience safer, more enjoyable, and convenient. Some of these features listed below are more important for full spa enjoyment, while others are optional.

4. Step Packages. The safest way to get in and out of a spa is to sit on the edge and swing your feet around. If your spa is taller than 28″, a step package will make entry and exit easier. Some manufacturers offer step packages to match the spa cabinet which add to the aesthetic quality of your spa.

Steps are commonly available in sizes between 24″ and 36″ wide. Some manufacturers also custom build wider steps, as well as steps to wrap around the perimeter of the spa. This adds an elegant, dimensional look to the hot tub environment, while also providing great safety. With this type of step package, no matter where a person enters or exits the spa, there is a step available.

Hot tub spas also offer accessories and amenities. Here are four accessory examples:

1. Chemical Storage Cabinets. A locking chemical storage cabinet provides a convenient, safe location for your chemicals adjacent to the spa. From less expensive plastic materials to the more costly wood, there are a wide variety of chemical storage cabinets from which to choose.

2. Planter Boxes. Planter boxes are available from several different manufacturers to enhance the spa environment. Consider spa location (indoors vs. outdoors) and climate before purchasing a planter box. Planter boxes are recommended more for indoor spas, or outdoor spas in temperate climates. Look for manufacturers that custom build planter boxes to match the spa cabinet and step packages.

3. Safety Rails. For those safety conscious individuals who need a little assistance, or who are suffering from an injury, safety rails can aid in the entry and exit of a hot tub. These rails make for safe and easy entry and exit, and will not interfere with the removal and replacement of the hot tub cover.

4. Cover Lifters. Covers may be very cumbersome to handle alone due to their weight and bulk. A cover lifter is a mechanism attached to the spa cabinet and the cover, making it easy to maneuver. These devices allow people to take the spa’s cover off or on, often with just one hand. This also helps to extend the life of the cover, which can be an expensive item to replace. Since 1998, spa cover lifters have become the most predominant add-on feature sold on hot tubs after purchase.

If you think that you might swim a little but mainly you want to be able to play with the kids, a shallower water depth and less expensive current generation system could be for you.

If relaxation is important you will probably want a generous supply of massage jets and molded seats so you are not pushed out of position by the currents. If you want to invite friends, the more seats the better.

There are a lot of attractive extra features to look out for like aromatherapy, LED and fiber optic lighting, water falls, built in stereos, air blowers etc.

For serious swimmers, the way the current is generated is one of the most important considerations.

Swim jets create water flow with the most turbulence. Manufacturers are constantly adjusting how swim jets perform to make sure the current provides buoyancy as well as resistance but they still offer the least enjoyable experience.

How fast is the current? Ask about variable speeds of the current-slow speed to top speed. Exercise swim spas are normally a constant swimming machine, not a sprint machine. Because you never reach the end of the swim spa, and you are swimming against a current, the swim tends to be more concentrated than in still water, because you swim at a constant pace. If you are a competitive swimmer and need a higher level of swim exercise, ask about optional high performance motors for competition style swim exercises.

How hard is it to swim in a Swim Spa? It usually takes only a few seconds to learn how to swim “against the current.” Most first-time swimmers are surprised at how easy it is to swim against “the current”.
